I started my running career in the fall of 1979 with the Shorewood Octoberfest 10K, and joined the Joliet YMCA running club over the winter of 79/80. I then became PSRR President in ′81 (and was President or Vice-President every year from then to 1994) when we moved up to Geneva IL, and converted the club from the YMCA Running Club to "Prairie State Road Runners", and helped jump the club up from about 40 members to 300+ over the next few years (among the larger running clubs in Chicagoland). I also created the PSRR race circuit that fortunately got a lot of attention from runners of all ages and abilities.
Running-wise, I ran my first marathon in 1980 (3:00:52), and ran over 4,000 miles for each of some 5 years, and by the end of next year (2010) will hit mile number 100,000 since 1980 (an average of over 3200 miles for 31 years, with just over 2800 miles the past 2 years). I′ve now fortunately been a national-class age-graded runner for 30 consecutive years (including 2009 where I cracked 80% in a 5K two weeks ago), having run over 80% age-graded scores in more than 90% of my career races (that is getting close to 600 races, and I have record of every race name, date, time, place, and age-grade %). I was also proud to be the master champ of the 1993 Chicago Marathon, and plan to come back up to run the Chicago Marathon again in 2010 after turning 60 on June 24th. I also have been the overall race winner of 77 races through 1999 (including my 4th career win that was the 1982 Rockford 4th of July Marathon), with many of them being runs in the PSRR Circuit (my first race victory was the Carbon Hill Homecoming 10K on 6/21/81). And I directed over 60 road races, including the PSRR Sundowner 5K, Joliet Summerfest 10K, Pilcher Park Poultry Predictor, the PSRR 10 Miler, and the 25K.
I have also been proud to be an inaugural CARA Hall Of Fame member, and I plan on continuing my running career "forever", with hopes to join PSRR events with some future visits back up from my relocation down here in Raleigh NC (where the winters here beat the heck out of Chicagoland), as I proudly ran the Poultry Predictor 3 months ago. And if any PSRR members plan to take a trip down this way, they can certainly touch base with me to say hi and/or to get info on some regional races that they can enter (including the nice Outerbanks Marathon that I ran this past November 8th and plan on running it again this coming November 7th, that my close friend Clint Carter may also join me at).
