Chicago Marathon

As mentioned in the September newsletter, the Prairie State Road Runners will be teaming up with the Park Forest Running and Pancake Club to volunteer at Aid Station 20 on Michigan Avenue - the 25 mile mark of the Chicago Marathon.

This is a great opportunity for many reasons! First, the location towards the end of the race will give you an up close view of the leaders in the elite category. Secondly, it's a great way to give back to the running community for supporting you in your races over the years. Without volunteers, the races that we all run would never be possible. And last but not least, it's just a festive and exciting atmosphere to be in on race day!

If you are interested in volunteering, please follow the instructions below. I'll be there and I hope to see many of you there too!!

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • It's a good idea to carpool, we use street parking on streets near (but not on) the marathon route. It is also wise to park WEST of Michigan Avenue, which makes it easier for the drive back, since Michigan Avenue does not reopen until the city street sweepers & garbage trucks go through.
  • Once registered, there will be a confirmation note that will indicate aid station time from 6:15 am to 3:15 pm - those are guideline times. Some of us will be there early setting up the site. Getting there by 7:00AM or so is plenty of time. Also 3:15PM is when there are just walking stragglers and they are moved to the sidewalk.
  • Generally, by 1:30 or so, the volunteers who wanted to run the last mile with someone, have done so, and we're winding down.
  • Dick Macknick usually has the grill going with brats & hot dogs by 2:00PM.
  • Remember... you can run to the finish with your favorite runner once he/she goes through the water station.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Dick Macknick at strohs111@comcast.net or me at president@psrr.org.
